VMWare and HTTP.SYS
For a while I've been wondering why my computer is so slow... and sometimes seemed to just freeze up for no apparent reason. I always just chalked it up to thrashing before, but this system has 2 gig of RAM so that really didn't seem likely.
Today, I ran across this article by Mark Russinovich and it seems like he's found the problem.
An interaction between HTTP.SYS and VMWare's virtualization drivers.
I turned off the HTTP.SYS driver on my system, and so far it feels better. It could be a placebo, so if I see the performance problems return I'll post it, but I sure hope I don't have to.
