For those getting the error

"The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process."

on the last step, reboot and press F8 when windows is about to start. Boot up in Safe mode with command prompt, THEN change to the directory and delete the *.FM* files as shown in the last step. Then, reboot.

Just bough a new laptop. Asus with Windows 7, 64. Before I had it a week it started loading updates like wild. Then there went something wrong, the updates were not completely installed. It tried to start again, but it never gets into windows anymore. Whatever I try, the message is : Updates are not installed completely, after getting the number 35% updated, it says an error occured, will start again. It shuts down, tries to start again, result exactly the same. Without end.

I tried System Resore (started in safe mode) but there are no recovery dates before the update, since the laptop is new. The failure message is 0*80071a91
Tried to contact Microsoft, but the Dutch part is not working during weekend. ( I live in the Netherlands)

Anyone around here who can help?

Kind regards,

Finally... After Microsoft Tech "support" telling us to remove firewalls and think about re-installing Windows, a few lines of commands and all is well again. Thanks very much for this solution.

I used the fix from the Microsoft website, but it only worked after restarting in Safe Mode (F8). Before I used the cmd in Safe Mode, I had the same issue as Kevin and Neeraj .... it didn't work ...

Form Microsoft website:

1. Log on as an administrator.
2. Click Start
- type cmd in the Start Search box, right-click cmd.exe in the Programs list, click Run as administrator, and then click Continue. At the command prompt, type the following commands. Press ENTER after each command.

cd /d %SystemRoot%\System32\SMI\Store\Machine
attrib -s -h *
del *.blf
del *.regtrans-ms
Restart the computer
