Windows Movie Maker Crash Solution
I found the solution to the problem I’ve been having with the Vista version of Windows Movie Maker.
Turns out the problem is the “Vista-Ready” Nero 7 that I installed at some point after installing Vista. Uninstalling Nero fixed Windows Movie Maker.

Thanks! For that, I just found that when I updated Nero 7 through the program that it also fixed it !! Try that, that way you can still use Nero 7

I have nero 7.5.90 installed on vista. To fix the vista movie maker crash when rendering, I just renamed this folder
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Ahead\DSFilter
Renamed DSFilter to something else. VMM no longer crashes and when I want to use Nero again, just rename DSFilter back to normal.

I’m back! Ok, so I found this post where someone mentioned disabling Filters.
So in Movie Maker => Tools => Options
Select the “Compatibility” tab.
I had 2 filters displayed (AVI Decompressor and XviD MPEG-4 Video Decoder)
I unchecked both of them. Clicked OK
Then tried to publish a movie and…..SUCCESS!!!
December 23rd, 2007 at 8:55 pm
YESSSSSS! I love you guys! I totally freakin went to tools, options, and disabled all the filters, and now movie maker doesnt crash everytime I try to publish my movies!

I have Vista Premium, when I try to publish my videos, the computer either crashes or terminates the program at 4%, I disabled the AVIDecompressor which is the only filter I have because I do not have Nero 7 or another other version for that matter. When I did that the computer halted at 34% and went no farther than that. I need some help!

August 12th, 2008 at 6:52 am
i’ve learned how to make videos with movie maker, but when I try to make them more intricate with the effects provided with it, I end up sacrificing the quality of the video playback, and then when I publish it crashes… I discovered you can’t mute a video that you overlayed with another audio otherwise it won’t publishh, so I have to put the volume down to where it will allow me to publish… anyways, the more ellaborate i want to edit my videos it will definately crash which really sucks, anybody have a remedy for this?
August 12th, 2008 at 7:04 am
my video come out really shitty with movie maker, i try to add a bunch of effect and fade videos into eachother and when I play them back the video and audio get all messed up…… can anyone recommend a better movie editing software? cuz movie maker is trash.

Hi,
I’ve Movie Maker version 6.0.6000.16386 and OS using Windows Vista Home Premium.
I sometimes have problems when publishing a movie. Sometimes it just stops in the process. Where it stops variates from time to time.
And for some movies there’s no problem at all. The imported media has the same format (.mpg) every time.
I have:
- Not renamed any files or sources
- I’ve have not Nero on my laptop
- I’ve unchecked all the video filters under Tools – Option – Compability
What can be wrong?
January 12th, 2009 at 4:46 pm
I was experiencing constant crashing when attempting to edit or load saved projects that used AVI files. I had ffdshow installed. After uninstalling ffdshow, the crashing no longer occurred.
January 16th, 2009 at 12:35 pm
i was wondering, i have the newest version of movie maker 6.
i tried to uncheck the boxes in the compatibility, and i tried the older version of it.
the problem is, when i try to import a video (converted by Movavi) it freezes up, and closes.
a thingy pops up saying:
“data execution prevention has closed windows movie maker 6″ or something similar.
any help???

X a long suffering WMM’er
March 17th, 2009 at 4:25 am
Some additional information…
- I don’t have ffdshow or Xvid installed on my laptop.
- I havn’t seen any problems when creating movies with .avi files
Seems to be something with some of my .mpeg files that Windows movie maker can’t handle?
The log in Windows Vista doesn’t give any clue about what can be wrong.
Does anyone know if there will be a new version availbable (newer than 6.0.6000.16386) that might fix the problems?

Hi everybody ;)
I’ve been using WMM version 6.0.6000.16386 on Windows Vista Home Premium and it worked fine.
But this morning all of a sudden WMM won’t start anymore. I get a little box with the error “unspecified error” and when I click ok, it closes and WMM never starts.
How can I solve this? Your help is much appreciated.
Sarah.

Knowing Microsoft this is far more likely a recent bug that came about due to a Windows update or something, as this has just happened to me randomly and the only thing that has changed on MY computer is updates from either Windows or my manufacturer (and I know it isn’t THEM because their updates have been completely irelevent.)
