DVR-MS

Windows Media Center Edition records video to files with the extension DVR-MS.  It’s disappointing to see that Windows Media Player 11 in Vista can’t play a DVR-MS file.

You mean they STILL haven’t got this straighted out yet!? Microsoft needs to decide between WMV and DVR-MS: if WMV is the way to go, then MCE needs to use that as it’s recording format. And WMP11 should playback a DVR-MS file! Sheesh! And I thought Vista was supposed to have lots of multi-media enhancements.

Hey – I’m the program manager for PVR on Media Center. DVR-MS files should be playing on beta 2. If not you are running into a bug.

Hi aarond – well it definitely wasn’t playing for me. Unfortunately I gave up on Beta 2 so I don’t have an install I can try it with right now.. but it’s very good to hear it’s supposed to be supported! Thanks for posting that.

I was trying to play a file created by MCE 2005 on Vista Beta 2.. any incompatibility there? (ie, does Vista only play the files that it created?)

I’m using vista rc1 and dvr-ms is still not playing because it says “missing codec” !?

  5. rayman Says:

Actually the audio plays fine, it’s just the video that’s missing the codec !

I am running RTM Vista, and when I try to play a dvr-ms file (which plays fine on my Media Center and on another XP machine) on MP11, I get “Your computer is running low on memory. Quit other programs, and then try again.” (obviously a bogus error, I have > 570MB free RAM, and other video file types (mpg, wmv, avi) play fine. Is this still a problem with Vista/MP11 ?
